-Team 5881- TUNGSTEEL

TEAM 5881 OF THE FIRST TECH CHALLENGE

We are 5881 Tungsteel, active players in the FIRST Tech Challenge since 2012.

For 11 seasons and over 12 years, Tungsteel has empowered the teens of the high country in Boone, North Carolina to join and participate in robotics to build life skills and get their competitive spirit on in each year's challenge, but most importantly to build and be part of a community that thrives and supports each other. And we do that by pursuing our team's invariable goal; fighting and perservering to improve and succeed in each new season with the help of each other and to spread the robotics spirit to our community, teaching and exciting anyone and everyone willing to take on the challenge.

Since we began, we've always been student funded and operated, only receiving funds to continue doing what we do through donations and fundraisers. While it is  unfortunate, it has, however, led to the consequence of our team not being focused on winning, instead, the process of learning and growing with each other in a more community focused approach. Each year, leadership may shift, circumstances may change, and new people must take up the opportunity and rise to the occasion. And so far, we are thriving.

Each year we devise our plans for the coming competition, to build the best robot we can, and to be a part of our community. As well as the main competition hosted by FIRST, the FTC competition, we participate in numerous STEM programs and other community fundraisers, namely BuildFest, SumoBots, and the Spooky Duke, all in our local community, most of which began as a way to educate and support the growing and learning scientists all around us.
